HOUSE SALISBURY
William Montacute (or Montagu), King of the Isle of Man, 1St Earl of Salisbury and 3rd Baron Montagu was an English nobleman and staunch friend and ally of Edward III. It is believed that he was personally responsible for devising the plan that led to the overthrow of Isabella and Mortimer in 1330, his one thousand pound reward setting the foundation for his quick rise through the ranks. It was his love of the joust that cost him his life, for when aged only 43, he was knocked from his horse and killed at Windsor. |
