House Plantagenet

HOUSE PLANTAGENET

Upon the death of Edward III, his grandson, Richard, took the throne; however,
he was an ineffectual ruler and, with so many able uncles more than happy to
relieve him of his duties. Disputes soon broke out, Richard eventually losing his
throne to Henry Boilingbroke, son of John of Gaunt and this succession led to the
period known as The War of the Roses.

It is worth noting that two of John of Gaunt’s sons married Joan of Kent, the
granddaughter of Joan, The Fair Maid of Kent, and Edmund, Duke of York,
married her sister, Margaret.
