HOUSE HOLLAND
Robert Holland, 1st Baron Holland, rose to importance as a result of his friendship with Thomas of Lancaster, transforming his fortunes and himself, having been granted numerous estates by his benefactor. Upon his marriage to Maud la Zouche, he became one of the richest Barons in mediæval England.
Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, was the fourth known child of Robert and Maud. In 1340, he was dispatched with Sir John d’Artevell to Bayonne, to assist the Gascons against the French. He later joined the retinue of the Earl of Warwick and was granted the honour of being chosen as one of the founders of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
